Results of a recent study carried out by the Division of Addictions of the Cambridge Health Alliance together with Bwin Interactive Entertainment AG have shown that online casinos are less addictive than land casinos.

The study was the world’s largest of its kind and sampled over 3,445 online poker player’s habits over the past two years. Dr Howard Shaffer, an Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School said that, "The very first thing we learned (studying Internet gambling patterns), which we didn't expect, was that the vast majority, the overwhelming majority of gamblers online gamble in a very moderate and mild way.”

He went on to say that, “In fact, correlation analyses indicated that as percent lost increased, duration, total gambling sessions and total amount wagered all decreased suggesting that individuals moderated their behaviour based on their wins and their losses, exhibiting ‘rational’ betting behaviour.'

The study revealed that the average age of online players was 27.9 years and almost 95 percent of them were male. The average amount waged each session is €13 and the average cost of each session was €1.80.

Manfred Bodner, the Co-Chief Executive Officer for Bwin said that the study aimed to replace speculation with scientific evidence. He went on to say that, “This study takes us a big step closer towards understanding the behaviour of online poker players. Ultimately, we are interested in developing algorithms capable of identifying behavioural patterns or identifying risk patterns associated with disordered gaming.”
